The Bakery building was built in 1835 to supply br The Bakery building was built in 1835 to supply bread for the village since most homes did not have bake ovens. It takes several hours to get the bake oven to heat. A fire is started in the oven and the heat is absorbed into the brick. When the oven reaches about 500 degrees Fahrenheit the coals are raked out through a metal door near the front of the oven. The bread is then added to the oven and bakes with the radiant heat.#Allaire#NJHistory#Funfact#NJParks#education
This was the second carpenter’s shop built by Mr This was the second carpenter’s shop built by Mr. Allaire. The first one was located halfway between the general store and the existing building, and if you’ll notice also on the far end of the carpenter’s shop, an addition to the building, that is now the wheelwright shop, and that was added in the year after, feeling he still needed more room, from the original carpenter’s shop.#allairevillage#NJHistory#NJParks#1830s#Funfact

The chapel served the village in threefold manner: The chapel served the village in threefold manner: a place of worship, a meeting place, and a school. The building was constructed in two sections. The first section (the entrance of the building) was constructed of old, recycled wood in 1832 in order to construct it quickly. The second section of the church was completed in 1836 and was made out of new wood; it was able to support the weight of the belfry. Most churches have the belfry at the front of the building, so it is unusual that our chapel has it on the back.#allairevillage#chapel#njhistory#funfacts

Happy Christmas Everyone! If you have been to one Happy Christmas Everyone! If you have been to one of our Christmas events or even watched a movie from England, you may ask, why do some people say "Happy Christmas" instead of Merry?

The words happy and merry are not exact synonyms. Happy relates to inner emotions such as bliss and joy. Merry refers to outer expressions of happiness like merrymaking and fun. The phrase "Merry Christmas" was used since the 1500's, but the word merry started to become associated with being rowdy and therefore lower class. Even today, Queen Elizabeth insists on using "Happy Christmas". In the 1830's, most people said 'Happy Christmas" to be polite. However, Merry Christmas was still used in cards and carols. Charles Dickens used "Merry Christmas" in a Christmas Carol which may have popularized the phrase again. In the past century, the word merry became less popular in daily use and became associated with Christmastime.
